Lessons From a Recent Family Camping Excursion:
Just because you go camping it does not mean you will have happy campers.
Setting up a borrowed tent may or may not produce family conflict.
When you have four chiefs, you need a few Indians.
No person needs to peek inside a port-a-potty . . . EVER!
Shrimp and steak meals take longer in a fire pit than Pinterest predicts.
When you ask your grown child how he slept, he may tell you he felt like a rotisserie chicken. He may or may not tell you how he tried to sleep on his side, then his back, then his other side then his stomach and repeated that process for hours, until he was done . . . Literally. 🙂
Grown kids might want sushi and bookstores while camping instead of swimming and biking. And honestly, that is ok. In fact, it was fun.
You know what else this momma bear learned?
Sometimes momma bears must let go of her bear cubs. Letting go of a man-child is easier when they become the teacher.
Grown men feel like conquerors when cooking over open flames.
Hot coals have dancing abilities that are mesmerizing.
Sometimes when you pray for no rain, it does not rain.
Stars are brightest against the dark backdrop seen when camping.
The pace is profoundly perfect.
Campfires stir conversations from a man-child.
Aborting my plans can set an atmosphere for adventures.
Just because I like to camp does not mean each of my children will. Originality in personality is key. I must allow them to be who God created them to be. The world does not need another Becky.
Hold your family tightly but also hold them loosely.
Family adventures are always worth the effort.
Expectations and Experiences may be far apart, but when we each choose to love deeply and live devotedly, it keeps the family close.
